Being a Grandparent is pretty awesome.

Grandparents get all the wonders of having a child in your life, with the added benefit of handing them back to their parents at the slightest hint of a tantrum.

Who cares if they were the ones that caused the meltdown by letting the kid eat a giant sized Hershey’s bar, because that’s what Grandparents are for!

They spoil your kids rotten. Plus that adorable little monster-child coming down from a sugar rush wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for them, they deserve a little recognition.

That’s where National Grandparents Day comes in! Grandparents Day is a great way to just be with the grandparents in your life, and maybe learn a little about them, their life, and all the awesome things they do for society. What books do they read, what are their hobbies, what were their favorite things to do as a kid, what is it like to be a grandparent?

And here are some ways to do just that! If you don’t have a Grandparent to celebrate with this year, for whatever reason, consider adopting a grandparent and make a new friend!

Bake a family recipe

Whether it’s a recipe that’s been passed down for generations, or a favorite from their youth, you simply can’t go wrong with food! Get everyone together to make a family favorite. While prepping the ingredients, find out about the history of the recipe and talk about special moments spent around the dinner table.

Have a movie marathon

Gather around the TV and pop in an old movie, bonus points if it’s on VHS! Get to know some of the classics from your grandparent’s youth. You may find you really enjoy them!

Break out the picture albums

Kids love photos, and they’ll get a kick out of seeing their parents or grandparents as babies. Introduce them to family members they may have never met and explain the stories behind the photos.

Bond with board games

Get everyone together for some great family bonding. Challenge each other with favorite games from way back and today. You’re pretty much guaranteed to have a blast.

Make new memories

Taking a trip down memory lane is fun, but nothing is better than making new memories! Take silly pictures, invent a new family recipe, go to the museum or our for a picnic. The possibilities are endless! If you aren’t sure what to do you can check out our Events Calendar for all the fun, family friendly events and activities in the Rockford area!
